Nervous System Health

The nervous system gathers information from every tissue in the body, interprets it, and coordinates the response. Nearly every question about health eventually becomes a question about how well that process is working.

Dr. Anne-Marie's perspective

I define health as adaptability: the ability to meet a demand, respond proportionally, and return to baseline. That capacity lives in the nervous system, and it is shaped by movement, sleep, nutrition, stimulation, and stress.

When adaptation is working well, people rarely notice it. When it isn't, they describe it in strikingly consistent language: tense all the time, wired but exhausted, never quite recovered.

What's worth understanding

  • Movement is one of the richest inputs the nervous system receives.
  • Recovery is an input, not a reward — it is where adaptation actually happens.
  • Children's nervous systems are actively organising, which makes early input especially significant.
  • No single intervention 'fixes' a nervous system. Cumulative habits do the work.

Common questions

What is nervous system-based chiropractic?

It describes an approach to chiropractic that frames care around how the nervous system receives and responds to information from the spine and joints, rather than focusing only on the site of pain. In practice it means assessing how the whole system is functioning and adapting, not only where it hurts.

Can birth affect a baby's nervous system?

Birth is a significant physical event for a baby as well as a mother, and it is reasonable to consider it part of a newborn's history. That is different from claiming birth causes lasting damage — newborns are remarkably adaptable, and most recover from the mechanics of birth without any intervention.

Why Your Nervous System Matters More Than You Think

We talk about diet, sleep, and exercise as though they act on the body directly. They don't. They act through the system that interprets and coordinates everything — and that system deserves far more of our attention.

Children today are asked to process more input, earlier, than any generation before them. What they are often not given is the recovery time that makes input useful.
