Pediatric Chiropractic

Pediatric chiropractic is the care of infants, children, and adolescents by a chiropractor with additional training in child development, growth, and age-appropriate technique. It is not adult care performed on a smaller person — the assessment, the force used, and the goals are all different.

Dr. Anne-Marie's perspective

Parents almost always arrive with the same first question, and it is the right one: is this appropriate for a child? My answer is that appropriateness depends entirely on training, examination, and force. A child's spine is still forming. The techniques used should reflect that, and the practitioner should be able to explain exactly what they are doing and why.

The second thing I tell parents is that a good pediatric chiropractor spends more time examining and explaining than adjusting, and knows clearly where their scope ends. Care for a child should sit alongside their pediatrician, not in competition with them.

What's worth understanding

  • Care for a child uses very light, specific contact — for infants, roughly the pressure you could tolerate on a closed eyelid.
  • A thorough history includes the pregnancy and the birth, not just the current concern.
  • Look for the CACCP designation or comparable postgraduate pediatric training.
  • A chiropractor should refer out clearly for anything outside their scope, including feeding difficulty, poor weight gain, or signs of illness.
  • Progress in children is usually assessed by function and comfort, not by imaging.

Common questions

When should a newborn see a chiropractor?

There is no required age. Parents most often seek an assessment in the early weeks when they notice a consistent pattern — a strong head-turning preference, difficulty feeding on one side, persistent arching, or trouble settling in certain positions. Any concern about feeding, weight gain, or illness should go to your pediatrician first.

What should I look for when choosing a pediatric chiropractor?

Look for postgraduate pediatric training such as the CACCP designation, a thorough examination and history, clear explanation of technique and force, honest scope boundaries with willingness to refer, and a care plan with a defined purpose and review point rather than an open-ended commitment.

Can chiropractic help babies with reflux?

Chiropractic care does not treat reflux, and the research in this area is limited. What an assessment can address is whether a baby is comfortable in the positions feeding requires and whether they can turn and extend evenly on both sides. Reflux with poor weight gain, feeding refusal, or signs of pain needs medical assessment.
