Ask Dr. Anne-Marie

Can birth affect a baby's nervous system?

Short answer

Birth is a significant physical event for a baby as well as a mother, and it is reasonable to consider it part of a newborn's history. That is different from claiming birth causes lasting damage — newborns are remarkably adaptable, and most recover from the mechanics of birth without any intervention.

Holding two things at once

I always ask about the birth: how long, how fast, what position, whether instruments were used. That information helps me understand a baby's mechanical history and explains patterns parents describe.

At the same time, I am careful not to over-claim. There is a version of this conversation that frightens new parents unnecessarily, and I have no interest in it.

My perspective

The useful framing is not damage, it is demand. Birth places demand on a baby's body. Most babies handle it well. Some show patterns afterwards worth examining. Both statements can be true, and the way to tell which applies to your baby is a careful examination — not a general theory.
