Newborn Health

Newborns communicate constantly through pattern: how they feed, how they turn, how they settle, and how they hold themselves. Learning to read those patterns changes what parents do next.

Dr. Anne-Marie's perspective

A single hard night tells you very little. A consistent pattern — the same side, the same position, the same time of day — tells you a great deal.

Birth is a physical event for the baby as well as the mother, which is why I always ask for the birth story. That is clinical information, not small talk.

What's worth understanding

  • Head-turning preference, one-sided feeding, and consistent arching are patterns worth examining.
  • Feeding difficulty and poor weight gain belong with a pediatrician and often a lactation consultant.
  • Infant care in chiropractic uses extremely light, sustained contact.
  • Parents notice subtle changes first. That observation deserves to be taken seriously.

Common questions

When should a newborn see a chiropractor?

There is no required age. Parents most often seek an assessment in the early weeks when they notice a consistent pattern — a strong head-turning preference, difficulty feeding on one side, persistent arching, or trouble settling in certain positions. Any concern about feeding, weight gain, or illness should go to your pediatrician first.

Why does my baby always turn their head one direction?

A consistent head-turning preference usually reflects a difference in comfort or range between the two sides. It is common and often improves, but it is worth having examined — particularly if it affects feeding, if the baby resists turning the other way, or if you notice head-shape changes.

Can birth affect a baby's nervous system?

Birth is a significant physical event for a baby as well as a mother, and it is reasonable to consider it part of a newborn's history. That is different from claiming birth causes lasting damage — newborns are remarkably adaptable, and most recover from the mechanics of birth without any intervention.
