Ask Dr. Anne-Marie
Why does my baby always turn their head one direction?
Short answer
A consistent head-turning preference usually reflects a difference in comfort or range between the two sides. It is common and often improves, but it is worth having examined — particularly if it affects feeding, if the baby resists turning the other way, or if you notice head-shape changes.
Why it happens
Positioning in late pregnancy, the mechanics of birth, and simple habit can all contribute. Once a preference exists it tends to reinforce itself: the baby looks in the easier direction, feeds more comfortably on one side, and spends time in the same position.
What to watch for
- Resistance or distress when turning the other way
- Feeding that is markedly easier on one side
- Flattening on one side of the head
- A visible tilt of the head with rotation to the opposite side
My perspective
This is one of the most common reasons parents bring a baby to see me, and it is a good example of a pattern rather than an incident. Simple changes — alternating feeding and carrying sides, varying which direction the baby faces, plenty of supervised tummy time — often help alongside assessment.
When to seek medical care
Raise a persistent head tilt, a firm lump in the neck muscle, or significant head-shape change with your pediatrician.
