Ask Dr. Anne-Marie
What is the Webster Technique?
Short answer
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic assessment and adjustment of the sacrum and surrounding soft tissue, used in pregnancy with the aim of reducing biomechanical constraint in the pelvis. It is a chiropractic technique performed on the mother — it is not a procedure performed on the baby.
What it involves
The technique combines an analysis of sacral alignment and motion with a gentle adjustment, together with work on the surrounding ligaments and soft tissue. It is performed with the mother positioned comfortably, usually side-lying or on a table designed for pregnancy.
What it is not
It is not a technique for turning a baby. It is worth being clear about that, because the claim circulates widely. The technique is directed at pelvic biomechanics in the mother; any discussion of fetal position belongs with your obstetric provider or midwife.
My perspective
I am certified in the Webster Technique and use it regularly, and I still describe it modestly: it is one tool for supporting comfort and pelvic function during pregnancy, inside a care team, not a solution to obstetric questions.
