Ask Dr. Anne-Marie

Can chiropractic help with breastfeeding or latch problems?

Short answer

Feeding difficulty should be assessed first by an experienced lactation consultant. Chiropractic care does not treat latch problems, but assessment of a baby's comfort, symmetry, and ability to turn in both directions can be a useful support alongside skilled feeding care.

Who should be involved

Feeding is a team question. A lactation consultant assesses latch, transfer, and positioning; your pediatrician monitors weight and health; oral function questions belong with practitioners qualified to assess them. My contribution is limited to the mechanical side.

My perspective

A baby who can only comfortably turn one way will find one feeding position harder than the other, and mothers often interpret that as their own failure. It usually isn't. Looking at symmetry and comfort can remove one variable from a difficult situation — but it is a support to feeding care, never a replacement for it.

When to seek medical care

Poor weight gain, dehydration, or a baby who is not feeding should be assessed by your pediatrician promptly.
